A stroke survivor living in Florida & working at getting back to being "me". I write for me because if I don't, the top of my head may just blow off from all the pressure in the there! It will never win any awards but it's enough to amuse me & that's all that matters.

Pole dancing or bartending?

I can honestly say that I've been a bartender and thankfully never a pole dancer! Although I've bartended in places where there were pole dancers! I can also honestly say that as a bartender in those places, I've made some darn good tips! Maybe not as good as the dancers, but then I've never had to bare my assets as they say nor had to bother stocking up on the liquid or capsule courage to bring myself up on stage to "go to work".
I met a lot of interesting and not-so-interesting souls during my sojourn into barmenship. It really called into play my years in psychology classes to say the least. As well as teaching me some of the finer points in multiple uses for certain four letter words!
There is no shame in being a bartender and actually I've always taken a certain amount of pride in my abilities in mixology. I've hired out to private parties & made some really decent change as well as kept my lips zipped about what goes on at those soirees which is why I was always a favored & much requested Libations Prestidigitator. And being able to pull off a few well coordinated hand & eye tricks in front of the masses never hurt business either!
Beat the hell out of being the one hired to shirk your clothes for a bachelor party! Most guys would rather hit on a sure thing, even if they know they have to pay for it rather than mess with the person that can cut off their alcohol intake supply!
Waitresses & waiters have a certain amount of control over what goes on in any given situation & can say "hey you've had enough!" But the bartender in most places has the power of a mythyc god. I've worked establishments where with a raising of my eybrow, two bouncers politely escorted an obnoxious "gentleman" to the curb & did not refund his entrance fee after only being inside for barely 10 minutes whereas the waitresses complained for half the time he was there. You see, when the tender is behind the bar (or head bartender in cases of more than one in a busy booming place), our word can be law and there isn't a whole lot you as the masses can do about it. Please read evil smile here in some instances.
I've had a lot of fun as a bartender as well as some pretty slow nights, so don't think it's all Tom Cruise & Cocktails or Coyote Ugly-although I've worked some bars liked that, and those by far are the best & most lucrative & the shift goes by the fastest! I will say it can be a demanding profession, both physically & mentally. You need to be at the top of your game, quick on your feet, verbally challenging without being overly offensive in most places (unless of course you own the joint or it's a real dive-& I've worked those too!), and you've got to be able to not take things personally. Especially insults. Because you'll hear them on more than one occassion. But you do get the chance to play god & dish it out as well!
